Istanbul (IPA)– Galatasaray’s poor run of poor form at its home ground continued this weekend as it squandered a 2-0 lead and three points on the Super Lig table to walk away with a 2-2 draw against bottom-placed Rizespor.
The Lions have drawn all of their last four home matches at their 52,000-seater Türk Telekom Stadium, with Sunday’s draw being a blow to the team’s bid to close the gap on rivals Beşiktas.
Galatasaray finished the first half with 1-0 lead from a Gary Rodrigues goal in the 40th minute. In the second half, Eren Derdiyok increased the lead to 2-0 with a 58-minute header.
But from thereon it all unraveled for the Super Lig’s defending champions as Rizespor took control of the match, reducing the deficit to 2-1 with a goal by Aminu Umar in the 67th minute.
The visitors from the Black Sea, who have so far only won one match this season, were unlucky not to seize a famous victory in the last 10 minutes as they pushed forward and had to settle for the spoils of on one point as did the Lions, who will rue the squandered opportunity to have taken a full three points.
In the last 10 weeks, the Lions have only achieved victory once.
Galatasaray is now seventh on log with 25 points while Rizespor is still anchored at the bottom with 11 points. Next week Galatasaray will play away against Basaksehir while Rizespor will face Alanyaspor at home.
