Devlet Bahceli has hit out at US President Donald Trump following the threats made by the latter through Twitter.
Bahceli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), was talking at his party’s caucus meeting.
The criticism by Bahceli leveled at Trump comes after the American President tweeted yesterday: “Starting the long overdue pullout from Syria while hitting the little remaining ISIS territorial caliphate hard and from many directions. Will attack again from the existing nearby base if it reforms. Will devastate Turkey economically if they hit Kurds. Create a 20-mile safe zone.”
Trump had threatened to hit Turkey with devastating sanctions in the case of a cross-border military operation by the Turkish army into northern Syria.
Bahceli remarked to his comrades: “The US President has lost it again. The tweet he shared is beyond hostile.” If he deems PKK and YPG representatives as our Kurdish brothers this would be a pure insolence, a truly born ignominy.”
Following Trump’s tweets declaring an abrupt withdrawal of US troops from Syria, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said America will prevent Turkey from slaughtering the Kurds which resulted in a backlash from Ankara.
The White House’s national security adviser John Bolton came to Turkey consequently to discuss the terms of a US withdrawal with Turkish authorities. Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan refused to meet with Bolton and the national security adviser met with Erdogan’s adviser Ibrahim Kalin instead.
“The Twitter lunatic must bring it on”
“How dare you threaten Turkey with devastation? It became a national service to enter the east of Euphrates after this, it is an obligation of national honor from now on,” vowed Bahceli.
“I say to the Twitter lunatic, bring it on. Neither fleeing nor fearing have a place in the Turkish nation’s code. A US president preferring terrorists over Turkey is of no consequence. I say to Trump, we can starve, we can live on the breadline and face economical losses. If we submit to you, if we ask for mercy, woe is us.”
Bahceli called on the government to stand firm against threats. “We do not take orders or ask for permission from anyone. Submitting to Trump’s threats means destruction. I say to the government at this point, never hold back or walk soft. God’s honest truth is MHP supporting you, citizens are backing you, your protector is the Almighty.”
