A second-half strike by Sinan Gümüş saw Galatasaray overcome a determined effort from Izmir’s Göztepe.
The win left the Lions only three points adrift of Süper Lig leaders Başakşehir on 35 points.
Göztepe fans were left feeling short charged as Celso Borges fluffed a golden opportunity in the 57th minute when he missed a penalty.
The attack by strikers Yasin Öztekin and Cameron Jerome failed to yield any reward for the home team in the wet conditions as the visitors Galatasaray absorbed the pressure.
There was a fair bit of luck for the visitors as Göztepe were unable to capitalise on an error when a back pass to the Lions’ goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was intercepted by Jerome, who then shot wide to the disbelief of fans.
However, even Galatasaray had their moments
A 33-minute header into the back of the net by Brazilian Maicon from a free kick was ruled offsides.
Maicon was back in the news when he was adjudged by referee Bülent Yıldırım to have used his hands to stop a Jerome header.
The rest is history as Borges shot went narrowly to the right of the posts.
Then in the 72nd minute, Gümüş broke Göztepe fans as he picked up a loose ball that fell from defender Lumor Agbenyenu blocking a strike by Brazilian Mariano.
