A 2-0 win by Galatasaray has seen the Turkish football giants finally replacing Medipol Basaksehir at the top of the Spor Toto Super League on Sunday.
Galatasaray went to the top after defeating Besiktas in a derby match at the Turk Telekom Stadium.
The Lions first goal was scored by Nigerian player Henry Onyekuru, a minute before the first half of the game. Fernando, the Brazilian midfielder, then made it 2-0 in the 54th minute.
Galatasaray’s derby win at home pushed this season log leader, Basaksehir to second place, as the Lions moved to the top spot in the table, albeit on goal difference.
With this victory over Black Eagles, Galatasaray ascends to the top spot only after 22 weeks, with only three weeks left before the league ends.
The Lions recorded the 35-game undefeated match at home with the latest win. This season sees one of the closest title races in the Turkish Super League history, as Galatasaray and Basaksehir both have 63 points and Besiktas is on the third spot with 59 points.
Basaksehir’s drew goalless with Demir Grup Sivasspor in an away match on Friday, thus weakening the Orange Navy-Blue team against Galatasaray. Log leader Galatasaray will play RizeSpor in the 32 nd week of the league and second-placed Basaksehir will face Ankaragucu in the same week.
