Greek titans Olympiacos beat the Turkish Super League’s new powerhouse Istanbul Basaksehir 2-0 on Tuesday in the second leg of their third round qualifier in Piraeus.
Basaksehir jeopardized their UEFA Champions League adventure when they lost to Olympiacos 1-0 at home last Wednesday.
The Greek club qualified for the Champions League play-offs with yesterday’s victory.
Basaksehir forwards Robinho and Enzo Crivelli disappointed fans as they missed goal scoring opportunities. Both teams failed to score in the first half.
Olympiacos’ Ruben Semedo scored a goal in the 55th minute.
Turkish giants Galatasaray secure over 10 million Euros
Like other Turkish teams, Galatasaray faces financial difficulties but qualifying for the Champions League has helped bring some relief to the club.
With the elimination of Başakşehir, Galatasaray holds 90 percent of the Champions League’s share. The Lions received 8.5 million Euros last year and this season will enjoy an extra 3,324 million Euros.
Galatasaray’s coefficient rankings Dynamo Kyiv, Basel and Porto were eliminated in the third round.
Basaksehir were eliminated from the Champions League but the team will continue to play in the UEFA Europa League group stages.
