Gunman fires at senior members of Turkey’s main opposition in Malatya

A gunman fired a shot in an armed attack targeting senior members of Turkey’s main opposition Republican Peoples’ Party (CHP)  in the Akcadag district of southeastern Malatya province, T24 news portal reported on Monday.

The Malatya Governor’s Office indicated in a written statement following the incident that the attacker, who was identified as a member of the secular CHP, took one shot during a meeting in the party’s Akcadag district building.

The assault carried out by a man with initials C.S targeted senior CHP members including Veli Agbaba, its deputy leader and Ali Aslan, the Akcadag district head at 11.42 a.m. local time on Monday the statement said.

“No one was injured during the incident and the gun used in the attack was seized,” the Governor’s Office said adding that police efforts to find the suspect was continuing.

“A member of our party took one shot at us with his gun. I intervened immediately and grabbed the gun away from him. He ran away afterward. No one was killed or injured,” Agbaba told journalists.
